Accomodation

Sleeping in a swag or tent under the stars offers an authentic outback experience. Some nights might be at a bush camp in the wilderness with just toilet facilities; some nights might be in a national park campground with toilet and shower facilities. But don’t stress, you generally get to swim in pristine waterfalls each day.

Transport

4WD trucks (9-16 seats). All vehicles are air-conditioned.

Meals/Food

Tour Operators prepare breakfast and dinner in their camp kitchens; and have picnic lunches in the national parks. It is generally expected that you help with cooking and clean up. Generally speaking, you will eat quite well on a tour. And all operators can provide for special dietary requirements. Most days, operators will stop at cafes or roadhouses where you can pick up some snacks or ice cream as well. Meals would generally include…

  • Breakfast – toast, cereal, fruit, juice, tea/coffee and some have cooked eggs/bacon some mornings
  • Lunch – cold meats, salads, fruit and bread for sandwiches; some operators have BBQ meats and salads for lunch
  • Dinner – BBQ or camp fire roast or camp fire stew and salad or vegies
  • Snacks – some operators provide snacks during the day like fruit or biscuits or cakes. And makes stops allowing you to buy some extra goodies

Attractions Visited

You will visit Aboriginal rock art sites, enjoy boat cruises and see spectacular waterfalls. Which locations you see depends on the time of year. Your Tour Guide knows the best places to visit at the right time, so you can rest assured you will experience the best our region has to offer.

The easiest way to summarise…

Kakadu NP

  • visit the major Aboriginal art sites Nourlangie and/or Ubirr; and some operators may also visit an Aboriginal art site off the beaten track
  • join a boat cruise on a  spectacular wetlands billabong away from the crowds or a Jumping Crocodile Cruise on Adelaide River
  • visit the Bowali Visitor Centre and/or Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre
  • enjoy extended hikes through savannah country and monsoon rainforests
  • visit waterfalls/rock pools for a swim – locations could be Gubara, Maguk, Boulder Creek, Motorcar, Gunlom, Moline and of coarse Jim Jim and Twin Falls (seasonal) - which waterfall/s you visit depends on season and tour duration
  • might make time for a short hike up a hill somewhere to watch the sunset
  • some operators include an Indigenous Cultural Experience – interact with Aboriginal people, try basket weaving, learn about ‘bush’ tucker, play a didgeridoo and/or throw spears

Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge NP

  • choose to join the Katherine Gorge boat cruise or paddle a canoe in Katherine Gorge
  • visit Edith Falls for a swim (seasonal); maybe hike to the top rock pools for a swim
  • visit the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre

Litchfield NP

  • visit Tolmer, Florence and Wangi Falls; and/or Buley rock holes
  • optional walks through monsoon rain forests
  • visit Termite mounds

* From December to April (wet season) our monsoonal climate affects access to locations and some will close because of monsoonal rains and local flooding. From May to November (dry season) almost everything is open and accessible – this is the most popular time to visit.

Fitness

A reasonable level of fitness is required to join this style of touring. You can expect to walk 4-6kms per day – generally the walks are through beautiful rainforests or savannah country to access a waterfall or rock pool for a swim. Some companies may walk 6-8kms per day. All walking trails are generally well maintained however you may hike up rocky trails to visit the top of waterfalls.

Hotel/Hostel pick up

Every tour operator will happily pick you up from Darwin city hotels and backpackers; and some pick up from hotels and private residences in the suburbs.

Tour Guides/Drivers

All tour guides/drivers are professionally trained and provide informative and entertaining commentary throughout the day. Tour Guides working within Kakadu NP are required by law to have licences. They must complete a training course managed in conjunction with Kakadu NP management, the Traditional Owners and Charles Darwin University.
