The Top End

Commonly referred to as The Outback; the Northern Territory is one of the last remaining places on the planet where you can fully experience the grandeur of pristine wilderness.
The Top End of the Northern Territory enjoys a tropical climate. Vast wetlands flow across the Top End; and are intertwined with savannah woodlands, monsoon rainforests and sandstone escarpments decorated with ancient Aboriginal Rock Art. The powerful rivers have carved the sandstone escarpments of Arnhem Land to create spectacular waterfalls and gorges. The rivers, creeks and billabongs are also overflowing with wildlife.
The Top End is a stark contrast to the harsh, arid beauty of The Red Centre deserts; and mountain ranges.
Aboriginal people are the original custodians of the Top End and have a unique relationship with the land. Their art and Dreamtime stories weave a connection between spirit and country; and provide modern travellers with a deeper understanding and insight to the mysteries of the land and waters. Aboriginal culture and art is the world’s oldest continual culture; and Kakadu is home to over 5,000 ancient rock art sites.
The most popular national parks for visitors include the World Heritage-listed Kakadu NP; Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge NP and Litchfield NP. And you can spend time with Aboriginal people in Arnhem Land and/or on the Tiwi Islands. When touring the Top End, all areas offer different attractions and experiences…
Kakadu NP – wetlands and rivers, crocodiles and bird life, Aboriginal rock art, waterfalls, gorges, rainforests, sandstone escarpments and 4WD adventure
Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge NP – Katherine River Gorge (boat cruise or canoe) and Edith Falls
Litchfield NP – waterfalls, monsoon rainforests and sandstone escarpments
Arnhem Land – Aboriginal culture, ancient Aboriginal rock art and art centres
